Tears immediately sprung to Candace’s eyes when she first saw her family after having been overseas for the past year.
Notice the helping verb: has sprung. Notice in the “overseas” sentence above … no helping verb. That’s a problem. If there’s no helping verb, the word needs to be in its simple past tense: sprang.
Spring — Sprang — has Sprung.
