Melanie looked forward to the new-student meeting that would help her get orientated to campus life.

Orientate is a back-formation of orientation and is considered nonstandard. Fortunately, we don’t need to use a nonstandard back-formation because there’s a perfectly good word that does the trick … orient. So, in the “new student” sentence above, Melanie wanted help getting oriented to campus life.
